“BARCODE” by CRIMEWAVE combines late 80s/early 90s shoegaze music and contemporary electronic music; a surreal, futuristic take on an old genre. Described by CRACK as ‘abso-fucking-lutely extraordinary’, CRIMEWAVE uses the likes of The Jesus and Mary Chain’s wall of sound approach and cutting it up, stretching it and obscuring it in whatever way the latest technology allows. As a matter of concept and principle, no synthesisers are used in his music, favouring digitally manipulated guitars to make synth-like sounds. The chilling vocals and lyrical content that rides over these beats echo the morbid atmosphere of the great northern cities of Manchester and Newcastle, covering the 2017 Manchester attacks, finding beauty in impoverished areas and the struggles of trying to enter an increasingly overcrowded job market.
